What is an organic product?

Organic farming is governed by official regulations.

Organic products must meet the requirements of ONE of these regulations:

  • In Europe : European Regulation (EC) No. 834/2007 and its implementing regulations (EC) No. 889/2008 and (EC) No. 1235/2008.

  • In North America : NOP (National Organic Program) regulation.

  • In Japan : JAS (Japanese Agricultural Standard) Regulation.

The product is controlled and certified by an independent and accredited body, such as Ecocert. The certification body guarantees the traceability of the product throughout the chain: production, processing, packaging, storage and distribution. Verification of products in the field can be supplemented by laboratory analysis.

A product bearing the label "from organic farming" must meet the following criteria:

  • Organic agricultural products : cultivation avoiding the use of chemical fertilizers and synthetic products; land fertilized with organic fertilizers and natural minerals which promote soil life; application of the precautionary principle.

  • Animals : fed mainly organic food; cared for using gentle methods; raised with access to the outdoors; maximum living space.

  • Processed products : made up of controlled organic agricultural ingredients and possibly non-organic agricultural ingredients and non-agricultural ingredients authorized by the European Regulation or NOP.
