What is this ? Also called adult-onset or mature-onset diabetes, non-insulin-dependent diabetes (NIDDM) is a metabolic disease characterized by chronic excess blood sugar (hyperglycemia). • Sugar intake (mainly through food); • “Internal” production of sugar (mainly by the liver); • Peripheral use of sugar at the cellular level: insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, then allows cells to capture and use glucose. . Causes and risk factors NIDDM is a very common disease that affects more than one and a half million people in France, and continues to increase. It represents approximately 85% of all diabetes cases, and affects as many men as women. There is not a single causal factor for the disease but several risk factors: • Overweight and obesity: between 60 and 90% of patients with NIDDM are significantly overweight; • Physical inactivity ; • Certain medications. It should be noted that specific causes of diabetes can sometimes be found: inflammatory conditions of the pancreas (alcohol, overload or malnutrition diseases, etc.), pancreatic operations, liver diseases, endocrine disorders, etc. In these cases, we speak of secondary diabetes, and not of NIDDM. All these risk factors should motivate increased regular monitoring: family history of diabetes, obesity, diabetes during pregnancy, birth of babies weighing more than 4 kilos, taking certain medications, etc.
